YOU AND MY STARS – 2023 – Thailand

BLISS RATING: ★★★★+

“Love is friendship on fire.” – Susan Sontag

How can you possibly not love or at least fall in love with this sonnet of adolescent love defined by the sparkle of the light from stars in the sky? The story is as old as time perhaps and to a degree overdone but still manages to capture our hearts, especially if it has a modicum of sincerity to its presentation. And this does. Mainly because the actors are so young themselves and their lives are so full of anticipation that it is reflected in their acting. It is surprisingly well done and very believable.

Win (Poom Jittipat) has a crush on his friend Time (BM Chanatip) but, because of low self-esteem, holds back on expressing his feelings towards Time. Time is making a jar of 999 paper stars he wants to give to his secret crush. While he is hoping it is him, it unfortunately turns out to be Win’s best friend Hunter (Photo Patawee). Time asks Win to help him connect with Hunter and he does. But he warns Hunter to not play with Time as he is a nice guy and Hunter has a reputation for being a player. Win when he sees them together is jealous and hurt but all he can do is continue to make his 999 paper stars and hope.

Hunter realizes that Win really likes Time and being his best friend, rather cruelly breaks up with Time which causes Win to react with anger and hit him for his heartlessness to Time. While they do make up at the end as friends at the end, there is an odd scene where Hunter does imply that he actually does like Time. Oh, the fickleness of adolescence.

Of course, Time and Win do get together when Win gives Time his jar of 999 paper stars, which I think is just such an endearing gesture. The cuteness and enchantment of the two of them sitting on the pier talking about their lives and future is both cinematically beautiful as well as breathtakingly real. It is quite moving.

Who really S.T.O.L.E. this series? Unquestionably, all three of these actors did. This is a very short series and obviously easy to watch. These young actors have some awesome talent. Kudos for casting young actors to play young roles, which is exactly the way it should be. Their youthful inexperience is part of what makes this series work and gives it extra charm. That part is not acting. There was a genuineness in their characterizations that I found enthralling and mesmerizing. These three young men, besides being astonishingly handsome are three actors to be watching out for.

This is a cute and adorable series that is just a joy to watch. The editing is a little suspect to me, and I do wish they would have made the transition between the scenes a bit cleaner and clearer. Things changed so abruptly that it was hard to follow at times. The sound on occasion was a bit uneven as well.

But it is well worth your investment to watch this short series and take note of three rather outstanding young actors who are on their way up in the BL world.
